Endued with power from on high
Luke 24:49. "And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high"
Our Lord Jesus had instructed the disciples to wait until they were endued with power from on high, even though He had given them the Great Commission in Matthew 28:18, 19, to go and make Disciples of all Nations. He didn’t want them to go out preaching just because they were enthusiastic. He knew they needed power from on high to be effective and achieve positive results.
The promise of power by the Father was fulfilled when the Holy Spirit came on the day of Pentecost: “And when the day of Pentecost was fully come…suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting…And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance” (Acts 2:1-4).
After the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, His disciples sojourned in an upper room, quietly hiding from the Jews. But when the Holy Spirit came upon them, every feeling of timidity disappeared. With boldness, they began to preach the very same Jesus they were forbidden from even mentioning.
Luke 24:49. "And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high" The word endued means "to sink into; to put on; to clothe oneself." This means wait until you are clothed with power. We see in Acts 1:8 that we "shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon [us]." This verse is not talking about the Holy Spirit residing in us, but about the Holy Spirit coming upon us to preach the gospel with power and therefore becoming legitimate witnesses of Jesus’ saving acts.
When we are born again, the Spirit of God comes into us in a measure. But there is another work of the Spirit of God. It's called the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. The word baptism means "to be fully immersed in." The idea here is that we are fully clothed with the power of God. Our heavenly father never intended His children to live and operate "naked"—that is, without the power of the Holy Spirit.
There’s no Christianity without the power of the Holy Spirit! The word translated "power" in Acts 1:8 is "Dunamis,"in Greek which means inherent power; the dynamic ability to effect changes. Power therefore, is the ability to cause change. Power also means wonder working ability or miracle-working ability. It refers to the ability to do the impossible. If you’re born again and have received the Holy Spirit, you’ve received the ability to do the impossible—a supernatural ability! It’s the creative ability of God, for the Bible says He created all things by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Have a great craving for the Holy Spirit and seek the Lord until you are endued with power from on High.
